5 out of 5 stars Culture Trumps Everything   July 24, 2010

Joe Tye delivers a little package of dynamite here. I had never really thought about corporate culture as being the primary determinant for an organization's long-term success. But Joe's crisp, authoritative fable made me a believer fast. The Marine Corps, the ancient Spartans--now those are corporate cultures. Everything else can fall apart but as long as the culture holds together--the shared beliefs, virtues and goals--the group will pull through and find a way to win. Mr. Tye cites IBM, Hewlett-Packard, the original Ford Motor Company (before Henry went off the deep end) and others to make his case compellingly and convincingly. The book made me think. Beyond a corporate or collective setting, each of us needs an "individual culture" too. What I like best about Mr. Tye's take on this is that his thinking is based on values. A corporate culture founded on the right values (not short-term profits) is what we need desperately today, with examples like BP, Enron and countless others showing us how NOT to do it. A terrific read, very thought-provoking.

5 out of 5 stars Corporate Culture IS Everything!   July 15, 2010
James R. Brown (Slidell, Louisiana)
If you enjoy "inspirational novels" you will enjoy Joe Tye's latest book, All Hands On Deck. Disclaimer, I am prejudice because I enjoy all of Joe Tye's work. That being said his latest book is about the culture or lack thereof within corporations. I am fortunate to work for a company whose culture is it's main point of difference between it and its competitors. Culture evolves within corporations some by design, most by accident. Within those companies that permit it to occur by accident, they find it very difficult if not impossible to change because as pointed out in All Hands On Deck, it requires every member of the team (the entire company) to change accordingly, one mind at a time. All Hands On Deck provides corporations with a thought-guide as to why culture is important and how to change it to work for you rather than against you.

This would be a fabulous book to distribute throughout a company starting with the Leadership Team. As Tye points out, change must initiate at the top and then permeate throughout the entire company; top to bottom, bottom to top.

This is a fun read, an enjoyable read and contains tremendous business acumen. Obviously I highly recommend it.

5 out of 5 stars All hands on Deck--8 Essential Lessons for Buiding a Culture of Ownership   August 11, 2010
Brian H. Shantz (Kitchener Ontario)
Joe Tye is a gifted writer with a creative genius of how to incorporate his core values beliefs into every day life. I just finished reading this book for the first time and filled out the survey. However, that does not do justice to my experience. My superivisor moved me into senior management team about three weeks ago. Last week when I started reading this book I read about one half of it on my train commute. That same morning In the SM meeting out of the blue our manager asked all of us for ideas on how to change the culture of our department. Well I could not hold back talking about "invisible architecture". My organization is going through a paradigm shift in physical architecture--moving its old outdated athletic facilities into a 60 million dollar revitalized historic building. The concept of invisible architecture hit home with the senior managers. They asked if any had ideas how to do this and I spoke up again about core values and your wording of density hiring. I have since forwarded them the netflix concept of empowerment and I saw that it is on the agenda of our next meeting. In early November there are several positions in my office that will change. I belong to that change and so does my future.

5 out of 5 stars All hands on deck   August 30, 2010

This is an excellent and quick read. It is full of organizational pearls. The author lays out a great road map on how to build an organizational culture of ownership. It is succinct, precise and right to the point. The lessons are clearly spelled out and the fantasy encounter with Walt Disney is downright "cool." Once you start it will be difficult to put down; I read it in one sitting. 10 great leaders with 10 great stories. The messages are applicable to all levels of management. Read it and learn. Definitely a booki I will refer to more than once. Thanks to the author for a very timely book and yes anyone one of us could easily be Corey. AD

5 out of 5 stars Great book to combat the "I wish they'd just own it" syndrome.   July 14, 2010

"I wish they'd just own it." Have you ever found yourself saying the same thing? Wishing the members of your team or those you lead would take more ownership in their role? Making better decisions independently, moving the ball forward as if the ball was really theirs, not always having to be hand fed and leash led?

Well, "All Hands on Deck" by Joe Tye will provide you with a solution to the problem. You'll discover how to create a Culture of Ownership, one where your employees show up at work for more than just a paycheck. A culture where they see themselves as partners in the enterprise...a partner that contributes more and performs at a higher level.

I highly recommend this book to anyone who leads any sort of team and to the team members themselves. It's the perfect resource, packed with action steps and best practices from legendary leaders, to help people rise up and add more value to the mission and bottom line.
